In a significant political shift, Akwa Ibom State Governor, Pastor Umo Eno, has formally announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), ending months of speculation about his political future.
Governor Eno made the declaration during a high-profile briefing held at the Government House in Uyo on Friday, where he was flanked by several APC governors and party stalwarts. The announcement follows what he described as “three months of wide-ranging consultations” with key stakeholders across the state.
Addressing journalists and party loyalists, Eno expressed deep appreciation to the PDP for what he termed “years of invaluable political partnership,” but maintained that it was time to “make a progressive move” in the best interest of Akwa Ibom.
“This decision is neither impulsive nor opportunistic,” the governor said. “It is the result of deep reflection, grassroots engagements, and strategic considerations for our state’s future. I have decided to join the APC to align Akwa Ibom with the center for enhanced development.”
Governor Eno emphasized that his admiration for President Bola Tinubu’s leadership and his commitment to national integration influenced his decision to switch camps.
“We are not joining the APC from a place of desperation or political weakness. We are coming in strong, united, and determined to contribute meaningfully to national progress,” he declared.
The governor also pledged unwavering dedication to the people of Akwa Ibom, assuring citizens that his administration's developmental goals would remain inclusive and people-driven, regardless of political affiliation.
“We believe in continuity, in growth, and in impact. The party is only a platform—service remains the mission,” he added.
The defection ceremony drew a powerful delegation of APC governors, including Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma; Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu; Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun; Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori; Ebonyi Governor, Francis Nwifuru; Ondo’s Lucky Aiyedatiwa, and Cross River Governor, Bassey Otu.
Political analysts view Eno’s defection as a strategic boost for the APC in the South-South region, which has traditionally leaned toward the PDP. The move also signals a potential realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, as the ruling party seeks to consolidate power nationwide.
A formal reception rally is expected to be held in Uyo in the coming days to welcome the governor and his supporters into the APC fold.
