Tinubu Commissions New Nigerian Navy Ships and Helicopters, Affirms Commitment to Maritime Security

President Bola Tinubu has inaugurated three new Navy ships—NNS SHERE, NNS FARO, and NNS IKOGOSI—and three AW109 Trekker helicopters (501, 502, and 503) into the Nigerian Navy fleet, bolstering the country’s maritime security capabilities.

The commissioning ceremony, held Saturday in Lagos, underscores Nigeria’s dedication to securing its vital maritime domain. Represented by the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, President Tinubu praised the Navy’s legacy and its essential role in national prosperity.

A Boost for National Security

“The sea has remained a pillar of our nation’s economic prosperity, and for the past 69 years, the Nigerian Navy has stood as the guardian of this blue territory,” Tinubu stated. He described the new patrol boats and helicopters as “force multipliers” in the fight against piracy, oil theft, illegal fishing, and other maritime crimes.

“This inauguration is a reflection of our determination to empower our institutions and protect our resources,” he added.

Tinubu assured the Navy that his administration would continue to prioritize its needs, recognizing that “a strong navy is the cornerstone of a secure and prosperous economy.”

Commendations and Partnerships

The president commended Chief of Naval Staff Vice Adm. Emmanuel Ogalla for his strategic leadership in modernizing the fleet and restoring pride to the force. He also acknowledged the National Assembly’s support and the importance of sustained funding and oversight.

“Today’s induction is a fruit of your strategic foresight,” Tinubu said, applauding the unity and bipartisan commitment that made the achievement possible. “Let us sustain this unity of purpose, for the sea does not distinguish between political lines; it demands our collective vigilance.”

Tinubu further appreciated international allies and technical partners for their collaboration, emphasizing that maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea is a global concern.

Looking to the Future

Addressing Navy officers and crew, Tinubu highlighted the significance of their mission: “As you operate these assets, remember that the weight of Nigeria’s aspirations rests on your shoulders. Let us envision a future where our waters are impervious to criminality; where fishermen cast their nets in peace; where global trade flows unhindered through our ports.”

The president reaffirmed that the Nigerian Navy remains the guardian of the nation’s “blue economy,” urging its personnel to sail forth with courage, knowing a grateful nation stands behind them.

Glide News will continue to follow developments in Nigeria’s maritime security and defense sectors.
