Canada and Mexico hit back with retaliatory tariffs on US

I n a swift response to the U.S. imposition of steep tariffs, both Canada and Mexico have announced retaliatory measures, escalating tensions in a growing North American trade dispute.

Canada Strikes Back:
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau unveiled plans to impose 25% tariffs on $155 billion worth of U.S. goods, targeting key sectors like alcohol, fruit, and energy products. The tariffs will roll out in two phases:

  • Phase 1: $30 billion in duties on American alcohol and fruit starting Tuesday.

  • Phase 2: An additional $125 billion in tariffs on other goods within 21 days.

Trudeau emphasized these measures are a direct response to the U.S.'s 25% tariffs on Canadian imports, including a 10% levy on energy products such as oil, natural gas, and electricity. In a passionate address, he warned that U.S. tariffs would have "real consequences" for American consumers, leading to higher prices on everyday goods. He also highlighted Canada's historical alliance with the U.S., citing joint efforts in Afghanistan and disaster relief missions.

Mexico Joins the Fray:
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced similar retaliatory actions, including both tariff and non-tariff measures to defend Mexico’s economic interests. Sheinbaum strongly rejected U.S. accusations linking the Mexican government to criminal organizations, labeling the claims as "slander." She urged the U.S. to focus on its own domestic issues, such as drug sales and money laundering.

The Bigger Picture:
The U.S. tariffs, which also target China, were justified by President Donald Trump as necessary to combat illegal immigration and the flow of fentanyl into the country. However, economists warn that these measures could disrupt global trade, worsen inflation, and harm U.S. consumers.

As the trade war intensifies, industries and households across North America are bracing for the economic ripple effects.
