N igeria’s Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, has confirmed that Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun will continue his tenure lawfully.
In an official statement, Fagbemi clarified that Egbetokun, who was appointed on October 31, 2023, would have reached the statutory retirement age on September 4, 2024. However, recent amendments to the Police Act ensure that the IGP serves a full four-year term, overriding the previous retirement limit.
“For clarity, the amended Police Act of 2024 allows the Inspector General to complete a four-year tenure from the date of appointment. Therefore, Egbetokun’s term remains valid until October 31, 2027,” the statement read.
The extension ensures continuity in police leadership, aligning with legal provisions designed to enhance stability within Nigeria’s security framework.
