P eter Obi, former governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has revealed plans to retire as a secondary school teacher in Onitsha to inspire students and promote the value of education.
Obi made the announcement on Friday while teaching final-year students at Dennis Memorial Grammar School in Onitsha as part of activities to mark the International Day of Education.
“I was just passing by when I decided to mark the International Day of Education here with you,” Obi told the students. “I told myself there was a need for me to come here and speak to students. Education is the most important thing in your life. It is the capital and equipment you need to be successful.”
Encouraging the Next Generation
Drawing from personal experiences, Obi shared a story of how education transformed his life.
“In 1970, I stood at the gate of this school to salute General Gowon during his visit and sang for him with other children. Through education, I have grown to the point where I’ve sat with him at the same table to make decisions,” he said.
Obi urged the students to take their education seriously, highlighting that many of them are potential future leaders. “Some of you are potential governors and presidents. That you are here is already a sign of success,” he said.
He also expressed his intention to retire to Onitsha someday and take up a teaching job to inspire children.
Supporting Education and Healthcare
In addition to his advocacy for education, Obi continues to support healthcare initiatives in Anambra State. He recently donated ₦25 million to Rex Universorum Charles Heerey Hospital, a mission hospital in Mmiata Anam, Anambra West Local Government Area.
While presenting the check to Mother Mary Akabogu, leader of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, Obi emphasized his commitment to supporting mission facilities. “I handed over this facility to you when I was governor, and I will continue to support mission hospitals because of their vital contributions to healthcare development in the nation,” he said.
A Legacy of Service
Obi’s dedication to education and healthcare underscores his commitment to human capital development. His plans to retire as a teacher in Onitsha reflect his belief in the transformative power of education and his desire to inspire the next generation of leaders.
