Bala Mohammed, Wike Trade Barbs as PDP Crisis Deepens

T he simmering feud between Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Mohammed, and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has escalated, with both prominent members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) engaging in a public war of words.

Governor Mohammed, who also serves as Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum, accused Wike of being a “political mercenary” whose legacy will be defined by betrayal and squandered opportunities. In response, Wike dismissed the claims, accusing Mohammed of incompetence and blaming others for his leadership shortcomings.

Governor Bala Mohammed’s Critique

In a statement issued through his media aide, Mukhtar Gidado, Governor Mohammed labeled Wike a “transactional politician” who prioritizes personal ambition over public service. He accused the FCT Minister of undermining the PDP, the very party that propelled him to prominence.

“Chief Wike’s ascendancy in politics is a testament to the opportunities provided by the PDP,” the statement read. “Yet, he gleefully undermines the foundation that nurtured him. His erratic behavior and opportunistic alliances expose him as an unreliable and fair-weather friend.”

The Bauchi governor also dismissed Wike’s recent comments about their personal relationship, stating, “Governance is not built on personal friendships but on competence, vision, and the ability to deliver results.”

Wike Fires Back

Wike, through his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, countered by accusing Mohammed of lacking the capacity to lead the PDP Governors Forum. He alleged that Mohammed’s leadership failures have left the party divided and ineffective.

“Governor Bala Mohammed holds the position of Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum out of political greed,” Wike’s aide said. “Despite usurping the position, he has demonstrated an inability to unify the party, resulting in a fragmented PDP.”

Olayinka also pointed to Mohammed’s political history, describing him as a “fair-weather politician” who switched allegiances when it suited his ambitions. “This is a man who abandoned his political godfather and switched from ANPP to PDP after being appointed as minister. His accusations against Wike are ironic at best,” the aide added.

PDP Leadership Under Scrutiny

The public spat between the two leaders has put a spotlight on the deepening divisions within the PDP. With both Mohammed and Wike holding influential positions, their rivalry threatens to further weaken the party’s unity and ability to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Political analysts believe the feud could have long-term implications for the PDP, particularly as it prepares for the 2027 general elections. “This is not just a personal clash; it reflects a broader leadership crisis within the party,” a political commentator noted.

What’s Next for the PDP?

As the war of words continues, the PDP faces the challenge of reconciling its factions and addressing the grievances of its leaders. Without unity, the party may struggle to present itself as a credible opposition force capable of challenging the APC-led federal government.

Whether the PDP can heal these internal rifts remains to be seen, but for now, the public showdown between Mohammed and Wike underscores the challenges ahead for the opposition party.
