Edwin van der Sar surprisingly backs Andre Onana

E dwin van der Sar has expressed strong belief in Andre Onana’s future as Manchester United's first-choice goalkeeper, despite recent mistakes that have attracted criticism. Onana, who arrived from Inter Milan for £48m, has shown flashes of brilliance but has also been responsible for high-profile errors in important games, leading some to question his place in the team.

In a recent interview, Van der Sar defended the Cameroonian goalkeeper, stating that Onana has "fantastic potential" and the qualities needed to be a top goalkeeper for Manchester United. He acknowledged that Onana has faced scrutiny after mistakes, such as the errors in the loss to Brighton, but remains confident that the 28-year-old will continue to improve with experience.

Van der Sar noted that Onana’s "attitude" and abilities will help him keep improving and be the No. 1 for United for many years to come, emphasizing that it's still early in Onana’s career at the club.

At the same time, speculation surrounding a potential new signing for Manchester United’s goalkeeper position continues, with Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel being linked with a move to Old Trafford. Despite this, Van der Sar believes strengthening other areas, such as attacking and midfield positions, should be United’s priority.

With Manchester United facing challenges in the Premier League this season, including the possibility of missing out on a top-four finish, Van der Sar is confident that the club will rebound with the right signings and a strong pre-season. He remains hopeful about their chances for future success.
