Senator Kawu Reveals Nigerian Senators Take Home Over N21 Million Monthly, Contradicting RMAFC Figures

S enator Sumaila Kawu, representing Kano South, has disclosed that his total monthly take-home package exceeds N21 million, challenging the recent claims made by the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) regarding the earnings of Nigerian senators.

RMAFC, in a statement signed by its Chairman Mohammed Shehu, reported that each of the 109 senators receives a total of N1.06 million monthly in salary and allowances, amounting to an annual income of N12.72 million per senator. The Commission detailed the senators’ earnings, including a basic salary of N168,866.70, motor vehicle fueling and maintenance allowance of N126,650.00, and personal assistant allowance of N42,216.66, leading to a total annual Senate expenditure of N1.4 billion.

The RMAFC also noted that while some allowances are paid regularly with the basic salary, others, such as the furniture allowance (N6,079,200.00) and severance gratuity (N6,079,200.00), are irregular and only paid once during a senator’s tenure.

Contradicting these figures, Senator Kawu, in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, stated that although his official monthly salary is around N1 million, his total take-home package is approximately N21 million. He acknowledged that deductions by RMAFC can sometimes reduce his salary to about N600,000.

"The amount of salary I receive per month is less than N1 million. If there are cuts, it comes back to about six hundred thousand naira and a little something as salary,"

Senator Kawu explained, highlighting a significant disparity between his actual earnings and the figures presented by RMAFC.
