Commissioner’s Cup kicks off in Lagos

T he highly anticipated Commissioner’s Cup returns to Lagos with sixteen teams set to battle for glory in the football competition, which begins today, February 16, and runs until February 28.

The tournament, sponsored by Lagos State Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Ajogbotafe Akinyemi, will take place at San Siro Stadium, Ikola, with the grand finale scheduled for Alade Stadium, Command.

Organizers have announced cash prizes for the top teams, with the champions set to receive N500,000 and a giant trophy, the runners-up N250,000, and the third-place team N150,000. Medals will also be awarded to players and officials.

During the draw ceremony on Friday, tournament consultant Femi Amusan emphasized the importance of sportsmanship, urging teams to focus on the spirit of the game rather than financial rewards.

“It’s not about winning at all costs; it should be about the love for football, not just the prize money,” Amusan stated.

He also highlighted the competition’s strict scheduling policy, warning teams against lateness.

“If you arrive more than 15 minutes late, you’ll be walked over. That’s why teams must be at the match venue at least an hour before kickoff.”

Amusan commended Akinyemi for his sponsorship, noting that the initiative will provide young athletes with a platform to showcase their talent and pursue professional careers in football.

Stay tuned for further updates on the Commissioner’s Cup, as teams battle for the ultimate prize in Lagos.
