F ormer Kano State Governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Shekarau, has emphatically stated that he never accepted bribes from contractors during his time in office. Speaking at a news briefing in Abuja to announce the 70th Anniversary of the Muslim Student’s Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Shekarau highlighted his commitment to ethical leadership throughout his eight-year tenure.
"I may not be the only one, but you can be very sure I’m one of the very few governors who, for eight years, never touched local government money," Shekarau declared. He emphasized that in his 44 years of public service, he has never negotiated with any contractor for personal gain.
Shekarau, who is the Deputy Chairman of the MSSN Board of Trustees, shared that the only property he owns is his house in Kano, while he continues to live in a rented house in Abuja. He attributed his moral stance to the teachings and inspiration of the MSSN.
Discussing the MSSN’s ongoing mission, Shekarau noted that the society remains committed to strengthening the Muslim community across Nigeria in various aspects, including education, economics, spirituality, and politics. The MSSN operates 37,000 branches nationwide and is focused on introducing new programs that foster unity and encourage active participation in politics and governance.
Reflecting on the challenges faced by the organization, Shekarau mentioned that it took nearly 60 years for the MSSN to acquire a suitable National Headquarters, a milestone recently achieved.
