R ussian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu arrived in Tehran on Monday to discuss critical regional issues following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, the head of Hamas' political bureau, by Israel. The assassination has heightened regional tensions.
During his visit, Shoigu met with Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Ali Akbar Ahmadian, and Major General Mohammad Baqeri, the chief of staff of the Iranian armed forces. The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation and addressing mutual security concerns. Shoigu condemned the assassination of Haniyeh, describing it as a cowardly act intended to escalate regional tensions.
Major General Baqeri highlighted the changing global power dynamics and expressed Iran's openness to enhanced trilateral cooperation with Russia and China.
Shoigu's visit aims to bolster the strategic partnership between Russia and Iran, explore joint economic initiatives, and address various aspects of global and regional security. The assassination of Haniyeh, which occurred during a ceremony in Tehran on July 31, has prompted outrage in Iran, with officials condemning it as a violation of international laws and affirming their right to retaliate.
