P aris police arrested a man on Sunday after he was caught climbing the Eiffel Tower just hours before the closing ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The incident occurred around 14:45 local time (13:45 BST) when the man was spotted scaling the iconic structure. Police quickly intervened and arrested him, although details regarding his motivation and nationality remain unclear.
Videos circulating on social media captured the shirtless man climbing just above the Olympic rings that have adorned the tower throughout the summer games. In another clip, the man, handcuffed and escorted by police, can be heard telling a bystander, "Bloody warm, innit?"
Reports from The Associated Press indicate that French police evacuated the area surrounding the Eiffel Tower during the incident. CNN also reported that the tower was evacuated, citing police sources. However, the BBC has not independently verified the evacuations or their status as of 16:00.
The Eiffel Tower, which played a prominent role in the grand opening ceremony of the Olympics, was not scheduled to feature in the closing ceremony later on Sunday.
