N ottingham Forest are optimistic that striker Taiwo Awoniyi will be fit for their upcoming Premier League clash with Newcastle United, despite being sidelined for the Reds' 2-1 defeat at Fulham.
Awoniyi was unable to feature in Forest's recent loss due to concussion protocols, following a heavy collision during their FA Cup win over Exeter City. The Nigerian international also sustained a broken nose in the match but has been fitted with a protective mask, which he will wear once cleared to return to action.
The concussion protocols prevent Awoniyi from playing for a minimum of 12 days. However, Forest head coach Nuno Espirito Santo is hopeful that the striker will be available for next Sunday's trip to St James' Park.
“We didn’t have the clearance from the Premier League about the concussion protocols so he was not able to go in the squad,” said Nuno. “I hope he will be OK for the next one. He is feeling fine, it is about making sure we follow the protocols. He was OK but we have to respect the protocols.”
In positive news for Forest, winger Callum Hudson-Odoi made his return at Craven Cottage after missing three matches with a groin issue.
However, there was some bad news as well, with backup goalkeeper Carlos Miguel sustaining an injury against Exeter, which will keep him out for several weeks. Wayne Hennessey has stepped in as his replacement on the bench.
The 2-1 loss to Fulham marked Forest's second consecutive away defeat. They struggled defensively, especially with aerial duels, as Emile Smith Rowe and Calvin Bassey scored for Fulham, with Chris Wood equalising in between.
