Harris expected to announce her VP pick Today, ahead of their Philadelphia rally

V ice President Kamala Harris is expected to reveal her vice presidential pick today, Tuesday, August 6th, ahead of their first rally together in Philadelphia in the evening, according to sources familiar with the plan.

While the timing of the announcement remains tentative and could change based on Harris’s final decision or potential media leaks, the planned rollout is expected to include a digital video and social media components, as well as a fundraising appeal. Throughout the day, the Harris campaign will send text messages to its supporters, continuing a practice used in past significant announcements. Specific details of the rollout are still being finalized.

This decision follows in-person meetings Harris held on Sunday with three potential candidates: Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, Sen. Mark Kelly of Arizona, and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz. Other names on the vetting list include Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

Former Attorney General Eric Holder, who led the vetting process for Harris’s campaign, was seen at the vice president's residence at the Naval Observatory over the weekend, indicating the thoroughness of the selection process.

Sources close to Harris’s campaign have emphasized the importance of choosing a running mate who is comfortable following the lead of a woman, specifically a Black and Indian woman. The ideal candidate will need to be willing to take on challenging tasks and support Harris's leadership without seeking to undermine her position now or in the future.

The campaign is particularly interested in a running mate who can appeal to demographics and voters who supported Biden, including older white voters and suburban women. Additionally, the candidate should resonate with white men who are disillusioned with Trump but may hesitate to vote for a Black and South Asian woman. The campaign believes that selecting someone with experience and moderate credentials could provide validation for these voters.

The Tuesday night rally in Philadelphia is set to commence a five-day, seven-state battleground tour for Harris and her running mate. However, an event in Savannah, Georgia, scheduled for Friday, has been postponed due to Tropical Storm Debby.

Last Friday, Harris secured the majority of support needed to win the party’s nomination for president from Democratic National Committee delegates during a virtual roll call. The Democratic National Convention will begin in Chicago on August 19.
