FG set to bar British Airways, Virgin from Lagos, Abuja airports over Air Peace’s lack of access to Heathrow

T he ongoing dispute over Air Peace's flight operations from the United Kingdom has escalated, with Nigerian Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development Festus Keyamo formally lodging a complaint to the UK government. In a letter dated August 1, 2024, Keyamo addressed UK Secretary of State for Transport, Louise Haigh, expressing Nigeria's dissatisfaction over the consistent denial of landing slots for Air Peace at London Heathrow, the UK's primary airport.

Despite repeated efforts, Air Peace has only been granted access to Gatwick Airport, a secondary airport. Keyamo warned that if Air Peace is not allocated slots at Heathrow for its planned Abuja-London route starting in November 2024, Nigeria may retaliate by denying British Airways and Virgin Atlantic access to Lagos and Abuja airports. Keyamo emphasized the need for reciprocity under the Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) between Nigeria and the UK and urged for a resolution to the issue.

The letter has been confirmed as received by the UK High Commission in Abuja.
