Right of Reply: Addressing Bayo Onanuga’s Baseless Accusations Against Peter Obi

Bayo Onanuga's recent article, filled with incendiary claims against Peter Obi and his supporters, demands a detailed and thorough response. The assertions made by Onanuga are not only misleading but also an attempt to divert attention from the real issues plaguing Nigeria under the current administration.

1. Misrepresentation of Peter Obi’s Supporters

Onanuga's portrayal of Peter Obi’s supporters as anarchists planning to destabilize Nigeria is both unfair and inaccurate. Peter Obi has never called for protests, even when there were clear signs of electoral malpractice. For instance, results from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) server indicated that Peter Obi won in Rivers State, a result corroborated by some local officials who admitted to fabricating election results under pressure. Former supporters of ex-Governor Nyesom Wike have come forward to confess that they rigged the Labour Party out and wrote election results that were then handed over to INEC.

2. Accountability for Economic Hardships and Corruption

The current administration under President Bola Tinubu is responsible for the economic hardships and corruption that plague the nation. The administration’s extravagant spending, such as the construction of a N21 billion residence for the Vice President, a N5 billion presidential yacht, and a N150 billion presidential jet, starkly contrasts with the daily struggles of ordinary Nigerians. These expenditures are selfish and anti-people, highlighting a gross misallocation of resources.

3. Misleading Economic Narratives

While Onanuga attempts to paint a picture of economic improvement, the reality on the ground is vastly different. Inflation continues to rise, and the cost of living is unbearable for many Nigerians. The recent increase in the minimum wage to N70,000 is a positive step, but it remains insufficient when basic necessities, such as a 50kg bag of rice, cost nearly the same amount. This clearly shows the disconnect between government policies and the real economic challenges faced by the populace.

4. Addressing Baseless Allegations of Instigated Violence

Onanuga's attempt to link Peter Obi’s supporters to the #EndSARS protests and IPOB activities is an unfounded and dangerous narrative. The #EndSARS movement was a legitimate protest against police brutality, supported by a wide cross-section of Nigerians, including many who are now disillusioned with the current administration’s failures. To conflate these protests with anarchism is an attempt to delegitimize genuine democratic expressions of dissent.

5. The Call for Responsible Leadership

The accusations against Peter Obi and his supporters are a distraction from the pressing need for responsible and accountable leadership. The current administration must address the economic hardships, curb corruption, and ensure that government spending benefits the people rather than a select few. Extravagant projects and lavish expenditures at the taxpayers' expense must be stopped, and resources should be redirected towards improving the lives of ordinary Nigerians.

6. Selective Criticism

Onanuga’s selective criticism raises serious questions about his motives. Why has he never addressed Omoyele Sowore, who has publicly called for protests and revolution? It is evident why Onanuga targets Peter Obi: Obi represents a significant threat to the status quo. Similarly, Atiku Abubakar has recently criticized Tinubu’s administration, yet Onanuga remains silent about Atiku, likely to avoid offending northern interests. This selective outrage reveals an agenda to undermine credible opposition while ignoring broader calls for accountability and change.

Conclusion: Who is Really Responsible?

It is essential to ask the right questions: Who is responsible for the hunger and corruption in Nigeria? Who is wasting taxpayers' money on extravagant projects? It is certainly not Peter Obi. The current administration needs to own up to its shortcomings and work towards genuine solutions that will benefit all Nigerians.

Peter Obi and his supporters are advocating for a better Nigeria, where resources are used judiciously, and leaders are held accountable. The right to peaceful protest and expression of dissent are fundamental democratic principles that must be upheld. It is time for the current administration to listen to the voices of its citizens and take meaningful action to address their concerns.
