U .S. President Donald Trump is set to sign an executive order on Wednesday that will prevent transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports. This order fulfills a promise made by the Republican leader ahead of his second term, aligning with his broader right-wing agenda. The White House confirmed that Trump will sign the “No Men in Women’s Sports Executive Order” during a ceremony at 3:00 pm (2000 GMT).
Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly emphasized the intent behind the order, stating it aims to “protect women’s sports” by ending what she described as the “dangerous and unfair participation of men in women’s sports.” The signing of this order follows a pattern of actions from the Trump administration targeting transgender rights, particularly in areas like the military and youth gender transition procedures.
Since returning to office on January 20, Trump has enacted several executive orders focusing on gender-related issues. These include a controversial ban on transgender individuals serving in the military and restrictions on gender transition for minors under 19. The executive order on sports follows a similar bill passed by the Republican-led House of Representatives in January, which restricts transgender athletes' participation in female sports.
Republicans have increasingly made transgender issues, particularly in the context of youth and sports, a central theme in the culture wars over LGBTQ rights. While transgender individuals remain a minority, their visibility has sparked national debates over gender norms, fairness, and inclusion. Many conservatives continue to rally around the issue of women’s sports, arguing that fairness is compromised by the participation of transgender athletes.
