T he South African government has announced the arrest of Anabela Rungo, the mother of Chidinma Adetshina, Nigeria's representative at the Miss Universe pageant, over allegations of fraudulently obtaining a South African identity document.
The Department of Home Affairs confirmed the arrest in a statement on Saturday, detailing that it was the result of a joint operation by Home Affairs investigators and the South African Police Service (SAPS).
Rungo, a Mozambican national, was apprehended at a hideout in Cape Town on Saturday. The Department of Home Affairs revealed that Rungo had been declared persona non grata in September 2024 after an investigation uncovered discrepancies in her residency status.
Siya Qoza, the department spokesperson, stated that, “Investigators from the department, assisted by SAPS, detained Anabela Rungo at a property in Cape Town. The Department withdrew Rungo’s South African documentation in September 2024 after finding that it had been fraudulently obtained, rendering her ineligible to continue residing in South Africa.”
This arrest follows controversy surrounding Chidinma Adetshina’s withdrawal from the Miss South Africa pageant, after questions were raised about her nationality and allegations of identity theft linked to her mother's actions.
