I n an exclusive interview with Forbes, Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has described his $23 billion investment in the Dangote Refinery as the “biggest risk” he has ever taken. The refinery, Africa’s largest, with a capacity to process 650,000 barrels per day, represents a landmark achievement in the continent’s industrial development—but one that came with immense challenges.
"If this didn’t work, I was dead," Dangote admitted, emphasizing the high stakes involved. The journey to completing the refinery was fraught with financial hurdles, regulatory challenges, and supply chain complexities.
A Vision for Africa’s Industrial Future
For Dangote, the refinery is more than just a business venture—it’s a catalyst for Africa’s economic independence. “We have to build our own nation by ourselves. We have to build our own continent by ourselves, not [rely on] foreign investment,” he asserted. His vision is to shift Africa away from being a “dumping ground for finished products”, ensuring the continent can refine its own crude oil and retain economic value.
Despite the scale of the project, Dangote remains deeply involved in its operations, regularly consulting with engineers and managers to ensure every detail aligns with his ambitions.
Beyond Oil: Expanding Influence
Dangote’s industrial empire extends beyond oil refining. He is also leading efforts to construct a subsea pipeline transporting natural gas from the Niger Delta to Lagos, alongside expanding the refinery’s fertilizer production capacity.
Looking ahead, Dangote plans to take the refinery public, listing it on the stock market within the next two years—a move signaling confidence in its long-term profitability.
"I’ve been fighting battles all my life, and I have not lost one yet," he declared, reflecting the unyielding resilience that has defined his career.
A Legacy of Audacity and Perseverance
This revelation offers a rare glimpse into the personal and financial risks Dangote has shouldered to reshape Africa’s industrial landscape. His story is one of bold ambition, strategic vision, and relentless determination—a blueprint for the continent’s future economic transformation.
