T he peaceful Oba community in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State has been rocked by unsettling revelations after the state’s newly launched security outfit uncovered over 30 graves and a shrine in a popular hotel allegedly serving as a hub for criminal activities.
The property, officially registered as Udoka Golden Point Hotel and Suites, but locally known as La Cruise Hotel, was located along Onitsha-Owerri Road. Following a tip-off and detailed intelligence gathering, security operatives stormed the premises, leading to its demolition on Saturday.
Sinister Discoveries in a Disguised Hotel
According to officials, the hotel was operating under the guise of a legitimate business but was uncovered as a den for kidnappers and other criminals. Among the startling findings were more than 30 partitioned graves located on the ground floor of the structure, a shrine, military camouflage, and ammunition, including cartridges.
The Anambra State government has remained tight-lipped about whether corpses were found in the graves or if any arrests were made during the operation. Christian Aburime, Press Secretary to Governor Chukwuma Soludo, stated that investigations were ongoing, and further updates would be provided.
Enforcing the Homeland Security Law
The demolition was executed under the Anambra State Homeland Security Law, which mandates the destruction of any building found to harbor criminals or be linked to criminal activities such as kidnapping.
“The raid followed credible information from concerned members of the public about suspicious activities at the hotel,” Aburime explained. “Graves, military gear, and other incriminating items were discovered on the property.”
Residents React
The revelations have left the Oba community in shock, with mixed reactions from residents. While some praised the government’s swift action, others called for thorough investigations to ensure similar establishments are identified and shut down.
“This is beyond comprehension,” one resident said, horrified by the findings. Another added, “The so-called graves might have been fish ponds. A proper investigation should have been conducted before the demolition.”
Brothel Raided in a Related Operation
In a separate development, the Agunechemba Security Squad raided a brothel in Akwu-Ukwu Oba, another area in Idemili South. During the operation, two suspected kidnappers and five prostitutes were apprehended. The brothel, which served as a hideout for criminal activities, was demolished on-site.
A security operative involved in the raid disclosed, “We observed suspicious movements at the brothel, and after confirming our information, we moved in and apprehended the suspects.”
The security team has pledged to track down other members of the gang who are reportedly still on the run.
Calls for Action
The recent discoveries have heightened concerns about the prevalence of criminal hideouts in Anambra State. Residents and stakeholders have urged the government to intensify its efforts in identifying and eliminating such establishments to ensure the safety and security of communities.
As investigations continue, the shocking revelations in Oba underscore the urgent need for vigilance and robust enforcement of security measures in the state.
