T he Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has announced that the Federal Government is ready to receive Nigerians deported from the United States. Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Director of Media and Corporate Affairs at NiDCOM, confirmed in an interview that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is leading efforts to address the situation.
Balogun revealed that an inter-agency committee has been established to manage the potential influx of deportees. The committee includes representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NiDCOM, the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, and the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA).
However, Balogun clarified that NiDCOM has not received official information about Nigerians in the U.S. being processed for deportation. This comes amid reports that approximately 3,690 Nigerians in the U.S. are at risk of deportation as part of a broader crackdown on illegal immigration under the Trump administration.
According to data from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), as of November 24, 2024, there are over 1.4 million non-citizens with final removal orders, with Mexico and El Salvador topping the list. Nigeria is among the countries with citizens facing deportation.
The ICE, tasked with combating cross-border crime and illegal immigration, has intensified enforcement efforts. Last week, hundreds of migrants were arrested, and some were deported via military aircraft as part of the ongoing operation.
