"You Can Go and Protest, We Will Keep Eating": Nigeria's Legislative House Under Fire: Akpabio's Disgraceful Leadership

L ast year, Nigeria assembled what many consider the worst legislative house in its history, presided over by the dishonorable Godswill Akpabio. While there is much to critique about the Senate President who governed Akwa Ibom for 8 years, one thing is uncontestable: he is definitely not "God's will."

The sexagenarian, who sits in grandiose ignorance of his legislative duties, has been found lacking in both character and leadership. His presidency has been marked by disrespect towards the senators and the Red Chamber. Recently, he showed his true colors by mocking protesters who are fighting for better governance. Rather than acknowledging his role in a failing government, he suggested that while politicians dine, the masses can protest.

Nigerians are sinking into poverty, and soon, we may disappear from economic reports. The National Assembly has failed to effectively scrutinize the various budgets submitted by the Presidency. The Akpabio-led Assembly seems to be at the mercy of the President, as evidenced by the hasty passage of a bill to change the national anthem in a bid to divert attention from poor governance. The Assembly has neglected to address issues affecting the welfare of the populace while asking citizens to endure hardship.

Senate Presidency is not merely a title; it is a significant responsibility. Akpabio stands at the center of every controversy, and though he is only 61, he appears to suffer from a severe lack of mental and physical agility. The role of leading the Legislature is to represent the people and hold other branches of government accountable, yet Akpabio has displayed a troubling incapacity for decision-making. Barely 14 months into his tenure, public trust in the National Assembly is eroding, leaving a democratic society with diminishing hope and a Judiciary that is already distrusted.

In this time of unprecedented hunger and political instability, we must stand united. We will not abandon our ideals or sense of community. We will march with one voice and hold this failed government accountable. It is our collective responsibility.

Appearance is reality, and the reality is that Godswill Akpabio is performing poorly in his role.
