P resident Bola Tinubu has announced the appointment of new governing councils for several tertiary institutions across Nigeria. This move includes six colleges of education and two specialized higher institutions, expanding on the earlier appointment of governing councils for 13 universities and inter-university centers.
The appointments were detailed in two separate statements issued by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to President Tinubu. These appointments follow an earlier directive from Tinubu in June, which was prompted by an ultimatum from the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU). ASUU had highlighted the adverse effects of the lack of governing councils on institutional administration, autonomy, and integrity.
In his statements, President Tinubu emphasized that the newly appointed councils are expected to leverage their extensive experience to advance the development of their respective institutions. He expressed confidence that the appointees would fulfill their roles effectively and uphold their statutory responsibilities.
