T he Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has provided an explanation for its recent raid at Labour House, the headquarters of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Abuja. The operation, which took place on Wednesday night, involved masked officers who stormed the premises and reportedly seized books and other items, sparking concerns and condemnation from the NLC.
In a statement on Friday, police spokesperson Muyiwa Adejobi clarified that the raid was not aimed at the NLC or its members but was focused on apprehending a specific individual renting space within the Labour House building. This individual, a foreign national, is allegedly involved in criminal activities both in Nigeria and across other African countries. However, the police did not disclose the identity of the suspect.
The NLC, in response, condemned the raid, questioning its legality and demanding the return of the seized items. The union expressed fears that Nigeria is descending into a police state where dissent is met with brute force and intimidation, urging the international community to take note.
Adejobi emphasized that the operation was conducted with legal authority and was part of a larger investigation. He urged the NLC to cooperate with the police to resolve the matter, stressing that the raid was a lawful effort to capture a high-profile criminal posing a significant security threat.
The incident occurred amid heightened tensions related to the #EndBadGovernance protests, which have led to widespread demonstrations against government policies and corruption in Nigeria.
