O peratives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have successfully intercepted several significant shipments of opioids and other psychoactive substances. These drugs were concealed in various items and were intended for export to the United States and the United Kingdom.
On July 29, 2024, at a logistics company in Lagos, NDLEA officials seized five different shipments containing substances such as promethazine, pentazocine, diazepam, tramadol, and morphine. One shipment, destined for the US, contained 820 grams of promethazine and pentazocine injections. The remaining four parcels, which were heading to the UK, included over two kilograms of opioids, including tramadol 225mg, molly, and new psychoactive substances (NPS).
Further, on August 2, 2024, NDLEA operatives at the Tincan Port in Lagos uncovered 77 packages of Canadian Loud, a synthetic strain of cannabis, from the body compartments of four vehicles—Toyota Highlander, Ford Explorer, Toyota Corolla, and Toyota Sienna. The drugs, with a total weight of 38.5 kilograms, were found during a joint examination with Customs Service officials. Two suspects, Salami Sunday (34) and Lekan Atoyebi (33), were apprehended in connection with the shipments.
At Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, on July 31, 2024, NDLEA operatives intercepted multiple consignments of illicit drugs hidden in tins of Cerelac baby food and clothing items. A total of 36 parcels of a potent strain of cannabis, weighing 18.5 kilograms, were discovered. Freight agent Salaudeen Abiola, who presented the consignment for export to the UK, was arrested. A subsequent operation in Ibadan, Oyo State, led to the arrest of the cargo sender, Bello Folu.
In Edo State, authorities recovered 220 kilograms of cannabis on July 30, 2024, from Egbeta community. Another suspect, Ibrahim Abubakar (55), was detained on July 31, 2024, with 40 blocks of cannabis weighing 19.2 kilograms along the Okene-Lokoja highway.
The NDLEA continues to intensify its efforts to combat drug trafficking and maintain vigilance against such illicit activities.
