D uring the unveiling, Governor Uzodinma emphasized the state government’s dedication to restoring Heartland FC to its former glory. He expressed concern over the club's recent struggles and highlighted the need for a strategic overhaul to rekindle enthusiasm and success.
“Recently, we saw that Heartland Football Club is going down the drain,” Uzodinma said, referring to the club’s poor performance. “So, we decided to satisfy the yearnings of our people and improve and stimulate enthusiasm that usually greet the successes of Heartland Football Club by reorganizing the administrative structure and strengthening the manpower and management strength of the club.”
The governor revealed that the decision to appoint Amuneke, a native of the state, was driven by the desire for a “homegrown solution” to address the club’s issues. Uzodinma highlighted Amuneke’s notable achievements in his coaching career as a factor in the appointment.
Setting Targets
Governor Uzodinma set ambitious targets for Amuneke, stating that the coach should not only aim to win the Nigerian Premier League but also compete in continental tournaments. “I have given as one of the targets to the leadership that you will not only win the (Nigerian) premiership, you must go for the continental league,” he said. “I am also committed to ensuring that Heartland becomes what it used to be – the days they were among the top three or four in the National League table.”
In a strategic shift, the governor announced that Amuneke would report directly to him, reflecting a new operational approach for the club.
Amuneke’s Commitment
In his address following the appointment, Amuneke expressed his commitment to revitalizing Heartland FC. He promised to work diligently with his coaching team to turn the club's fortunes around.
“Your excellency, I am promising you that, on behalf of myself and my team, we are going to do our best to make sure to turn the situation of Heartland,” Amuneke said. He recounted his successful stint with Tanzania, where he led the national team to qualify for the 2019 African Cup of Nations after a 39-year absence.
“So, your excellency, you can be rest assured. I will make sure that with your support, we will bring Heartland to where it belongs,” Amuneke assured.
The appointment of Emmanuel Amuneke signals a new chapter for Heartland FC as it seeks to reclaim its place among Nigeria's top football clubs. The state's investment in the club's future reflects a broader ambition to restore Heartland to its former prominence.
