Donald Trump and Kamala Harris Set to Debate on ABC, Faceoff Scheduled for September 10

F ormer President Donald Trump confirmed on Thursday that he has agreed to a highly anticipated debate with Vice President Kamala Harris. The event is set to take place on September 10, 2024, and will be broadcast live on ABC. This debate marks one of the three potential faceoffs planned for September, although the details of the other two remain uncertain.

Trump’s Press Conference: Filled with Attacks and Falsehoods

During a news conference held at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, Trump addressed reporters in what was his first major public appearance since the Democratic ticket was finalized. His remarks, however, were riddled with inaccuracies. Trump criticized Vice President Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, while praising his own running mate, Ohio Senator JD Vance.

One of the most notable false claims made by Trump was that Harris "couldn’t pass her bar exam." While it is true that Harris initially failed the bar exam on her first attempt, she did successfully pass it later and was admitted to the California bar in 1990. Trump's comments misleadingly implied that she never passed the exam.

On the Campaign Trail: Harris and Walz Criticize Trump’s Policies

Meanwhile, Harris and Walz continued their campaign trail across key battleground states. On Thursday, they made stops in Michigan before heading to Arizona, where they decried Trump’s policies and highlighted their vision for the future. The duo is focusing on engaging voters in states that could be pivotal in the upcoming election.

Fact-Checking Trump's Statements

  • January 6 Deaths: Trump falsely claimed that “nobody was killed on January 6.” In reality, several individuals lost their lives as a result of the events that day, including Ashli Babbitt, who was shot by Capitol Police, and others who suffered medical emergencies during the riot. Additionally, Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick died after suffering strokes following the attack, although his death was later ruled as due to natural causes, the events played a role in his condition.

  • Electric Vehicles: Trump also repeated a false claim that Democrats would force everyone to buy electric cars if they win the election. While the Biden administration has implemented policies to promote the adoption of electric vehicles and reduce emissions, there is no mandate requiring all Americans to switch to electric vehicles.

  • Energy Prices and Inflation: Trump exaggerated the impact of energy prices on inflation, claiming the U.S. would not have experienced “any inflation” without “bad energy problems” during Biden’s tenure. While energy prices, particularly following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, did contribute to inflation, other factors such as pandemic-related supply chain disruptions also played a significant role.

  • Border Czar Claim: Trump falsely stated that Harris was the “border czar” during her tenure as vice president. Harris was tasked with leading diplomatic efforts with Central American countries to address the root causes of migration, but she was never in charge of border security.

Trump’s Campaign Strategy Moving Forward

Trump explained his recent absence from the campaign trail, stating that he has been focusing on producing commercials and conducting interviews from his Mar-a-Lago estate. He indicated that his campaign activities would ramp up after the Democratic National Convention, set to take place later this month in Chicago. Trump took the opportunity to further criticize Harris, questioning her competence and ability to hold a press conference.

The upcoming debate between Trump and Harris promises to be a pivotal moment in the 2024 election, with both sides gearing up for a fierce confrontation on key issues facing the nation.
