APC Challenges Rivers State Court's Ruling on Executive Removal

T he All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticized a recent Rivers State High Court ruling that nullified the dissolution of the Emeka Beke-led state executive. The court, presided over by Justice Sika Aprioku, ruled on Monday that the APC National Working Committee acted beyond its authority by removing the elected executive and installing a caretaker committee led by Tony Okocha.

Justice Aprioku's decision emphasized that the National Working Committee lacked the power to dissolve a state executive while its tenure was still active, and thus barred the caretaker committee from acting as APC executives in Rivers State.

In response, Chibuike Ikenga, the spokesman for the Rivers APC Caretaker Committee, dismissed the ruling as ineffectual. He argued that the Supreme Court had previously addressed similar issues, asserting that the recent judgment could not override higher court decisions on the internal matters of political parties.

Ikenga alleged that the ruling was influenced by political motivations linked to the Rivers State government and critics of President Bola Tinubu. He accused the judge of being part of a broader effort to undermine the APC and its leadership.

“We view this judgment as a choreographed attempt to counter our party’s position,” Ikenga told The PUNCH. “Our lawyers are preparing an appeal, and our party has authorized us to continue our roles. The court cannot impose a leadership on us that has been removed for anti-party activities.”

He further explained that the dissolution of the Beke-led executive was due to their alleged support for Atiku Abubakar of the PDP over President Tinubu during the election campaign.
