In a recent interview with TheNEWS marking his 90th birthday, Nobel Laureate Professor Wole Soyinka described former US President Donald Trump as a "consummate liar," labeling him a menace and a danger to the world. Soyinka's comments highlighted his view that Trump understood the American psyche and knew how to manipulate public opinion to his advantage.
Soyinka stated, "I don’t think the world has ever known such a consummate liar like Donald Trump," and criticized Trump's tactics to sway American voters.
Interestingly, while Soyinka has been vocal about political matters in the United States, he has remained conspicuously silent on the administration of Nigerian President Bola Tinubu. Before Tinubu's first year in office, Soyinka mentioned he would assess the government's performance after a year. However, despite the one-year mark passing, Soyinka has not made any public statements regarding Tinubu's tenure.
This silence has not gone unnoticed, as many Nigerians look to Soyinka for his candid opinions on national issues. The contrast between his willingness to critique foreign leaders while remaining reticent about the current Nigerian administration has raised eyebrows and prompted discussions about his stance on domestic politics.
