UK Issues Travel Advisory Ahead of #EndBadGovt Protests in Nigeria

B ritain’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued a travel advisory warning citizens against traveling to several parts of Nigeria amid planned nationwide protests. The advisory, published on Friday, comes in response to the upcoming #EndBadGovt protests set to begin in Nigeria on August 1, 2024, which have been gaining significant momentum.

The FCDO, responsible for advising British nationals about travel risks worldwide, aims to help citizens make informed travel decisions. In its latest update on the UK government's website, the FCDO stated, “New information as of July 26 indicates that widespread public demonstrations are a possibility across Nigeria.” The advisory urges British citizens to thoroughly research their destinations before traveling.

The advisory specifically highlights certain states in five of Nigeria’s six regions where the protests may pose significant risks. The FCDO warned against all but essential travel to the following areas:

  • Abia State
  • Non-riverine areas of Delta, Bayelsa, and Rivers States
  • Akwa Ibom State
  • Anambra State
  • Imo State

Additionally, the FCDO advised against travel to the Nigeria-Niger Republic land border, which has been closed by Nigerian authorities in response to the political situation in Niger. Citizens planning to travel by land across the Nigeria-Niger border are advised to check with local authorities in both countries for the latest information before traveling.

The advisory also noted that traveling against FCDO advice could invalidate travel insurance.

With the #EndBadGovt protests aimed at addressing ongoing governance and economic issues in Nigeria, the FCDO’s warning underscores the potential for unrest and the importance of safety for British nationals.
