Silent Red Alert in Lagos: Police Raids and Arbitrary Arrests

R eports have emerged of a silent red alert in Lagos, where police officers are reportedly picking people up randomly from 7 p.m. in various areas. The incidents seem to be targeting gatherings of two or three people in certain places, raising concerns among residents about their safety and freedom of movement.

A recent victim of this alarming trend was a man who was picked up in Ikoyi on Tuesday night, July 23, 2024. The man, who was out to buy dinner, was detained by police and kept in a cell overnight. He was then taken to Bolade Oshodi mobile court. After a harrowing experience, his family had to part with 60,000 Naira to secure his release.

This incident has raised serious concerns about the conduct of the police and the arbitrary nature of these arrests. Another report from a friend mentioned a similar raid happening in Pen Cinema, Agege, indicating that this might be a widespread operation across the city.

Residents are advised to be cautious and to warn young people against keeping late nights. The arbitrary nature of these arrests means that anyone can be a target, regardless of their intentions or activities.

The brother-in-law of the victim shared his experience, saying, "If we had not located him early, they were going to take them to prison. He only went out to buy dinner, and the police picked him up. Just thought to put it out there. God bless you all. May we not be forced to pay what we don't owe."

This situation highlights the need for greater accountability and transparency within the police force. It also underscores the importance of citizens being aware of their rights and the need for vigilance in the face of such arbitrary actions.

Stay safe, Lagosians, and let's look out for one another during these challenging times.
