In response to mounting complaints of hardship amidst soaring inflation, the Federal Government has embarked on a significant initiative to provide relief to vulnerable Nigerians. Addressing reporters after the Federal Executive Council meeting, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, announced that the government has donated 20 trucks of rice to each of the 36 state governors and the Federal Capital Territory for immediate distribution.
Minister Idris emphasized that the rice distribution is part of broader efforts to mitigate the economic challenges faced by Nigerians, particularly in ensuring food security. Each truck, he disclosed, carries approximately 1,200 25kg bags of rice, earmarked specifically for the most vulnerable segments of the population.
"The Federal Government remains committed to easing the hardship experienced by Nigerians, especially in terms of food scarcity," Minister Idris stated. "This initial allocation of rice is intended as a first step, with ongoing support planned to further alleviate the food shortages being felt across the country."
Highlighting additional measures, Minister Idris noted that the Federal Executive Council has instructed the Presidential Committee on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) to expedite efforts aimed at easing transportation costs. This directive includes scaling up the availability of CNG conversion kits and upgrading existing conversion centers to reduce reliance on premium motor spirit (PMS).
"In addition to the rice distribution, efforts are underway to enhance fertilizer supply and support agricultural productivity," Minister Idris added. "The Central Bank of Nigeria has already made substantial fertilizer allocations, further underscoring our commitment to bolstering food security and sustainable agricultural practices."
The initiative comes amidst widespread economic challenges exacerbated by global economic uncertainties and domestic inflationary pressures. With state governors now tasked with overseeing the distribution of rice to those most in need, the government remains steadfast in its resolve to address the immediate needs of Nigerians and foster long-term economic stability.
