Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has commended the recent decision by members of the House of Representatives to slash their salaries by 50 percent but emphasized that this measure is insufficient to address the broader issues of wastage and financial irresponsibility in government.
In a tweet, Atiku acknowledged the sacrifice made by the legislators but described it as "a drop in the ocean." He pointed out that the real financial burden lies in the allowances of lawmakers and government officials, rather than their salaries.
Atiku questioned the status of the Oronsaye Report, which recommended the streamlining of government agencies to reduce costs. He observed that, despite the report's recommendations, there has been an increase in the number of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), leading to escalating costs.
He highlighted the need for a comprehensive reduction in government expenditures, arguing that the focus should be on cutting non-essential spending and eliminating wastage. "We can no longer afford to borrow money to fund continued irresponsibility in government," Atiku stated, urging for an across-the-board cut in expenses to ensure fiscal responsibility.
Atiku's comments come in the wake of economic challenges and increasing public debt, calling for more stringent measures to manage the country's finances effectively.
