Gov Fubara Orders Audit of Local Govt Accounts After Swearing In New Caretakers

Port Harcourt, June 19, 2024 – Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has directed an audit of local government accounts following the swearing-in of new caretaker chairmen for the state's 23 local government areas. This move came after the state House of Assembly, led by factional Speaker Victor Jumbo, screened and approved Fubara’s nominees.

During the inauguration, Governor Fubara emphasized that the audit aims to ensure accountability for the incoming officials. He urged them to prioritize the interests of the people and highlighted the broader implications for democratic practices in Nigeria. Fubara stressed that the caretaker committees' tenure would be brief, with LGA elections set to commence soon.

Furthermore, the governor instructed the new officials to address the salaries and entitlements of the outgoing LGA chairmen and warned against using violence in their duties.
