Emirship tussle: Kwankwaso Accuses Federal Government of Compromising Security in Kano

Rabiu Kwankwaso

Rabiu Kwankwaso, presidential candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) in the upcoming 2023 elections, has launched scathing criticisms against the federal government, accusing it of jeopardizing security in Kano State. His remarks came during the commencement of the construction of 82 kilometers of rural roads in Madobi, his hometown.

The former Kano State governor expressed concern over what he described as undue interference by the federal government influenced by "unpatriotic politicians" from the state. Kwankwaso's comments were in response to the ongoing security situation in Kano, particularly the alleged support of security agencies for Aminu Ado Bayero, the deposed emir.

"We will not sit idly by while enemies of the state attempt to undermine our authority," Kwankwaso asserted defiantly. "The people of Kano are resolute in protecting our peaceful coexistence and will vehemently oppose any attempt to destabilize our dear state."

He further emphasized his party's commitment to serving the people wherever they are elected, pledging unwavering support to the current administration in Kano. Kwankwaso also criticized what he termed as political maneuverings ahead of the 2027 elections, warning against any attempts to disrupt the peace and stability in the state.

The former minister of defense denounced suggestions of imposing a state of emergency in Kano as "madness of the highest order," asserting that the people of Kano would resist such measures vigorously.

Backgrounding the issue, Kwankwaso referenced the contentious removal of Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as Emir of Kano in 2020 by Abdullahi Ganduje, his political successor. The subsequent installation of Aminu Ado Bayero as Emir of Bichi amid legal challenges and public outcry has been a focal point of political tension in the state.

In response to the recent protests sparked by Sanusi's reinstatement as Emir of Kano, Kwankwaso condemned the alleged politicization of security agencies and urged for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing crisis.
