Buhari Urges Patience and Unity as Tinubu Marks Two Years in Office

As President Bola Tinubu’s administration reaches the two-year milestone, former President Muhammadu Buhari has called on Nigerians to support ongoing reforms and avoid letting political disputes derail the government’s agenda. In a statement marking Tinubu’s mid-term, Buhari emphasized the need for patience and collective effort to tackle pressing national challenges.

“Reforms Take Time, Not Overnight”—Buhari

Buhari’s message, conveyed through his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, congratulated President Tinubu while reminding citizens that transformative policies—such as tackling poverty and curbing inflation—require time to yield results.

“Reforms would achieve success gradually, not overnight,” Buhari noted, urging steadfast support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) government. He warned that “necessary reforms and desired changes must not fall victim to nettlesome domestic politics,” cautioning against distractions that could undermine the administration’s goals.

Addressing Cost-of-Living and Economic Challenges

Since assuming office on May 29, 2023, Tinubu’s government has implemented several sweeping changes under the “Renewed Hope Agenda.” These include the removal of petrol subsidies, liberalization of the naira, and repayment of a $3.4 billion COVID-19 loan. While these reforms have been credited with improving fiscal stability, they have also contributed to a significant cost-of-living crisis.

Buhari acknowledged these hardships, especially for the country’s poorest families, and stressed that “combating poverty and inflation…cannot fall on the government alone.” He called on the private sector and all Nigerians to join hands in building a resilient economy.

Optimism for Nigeria’s Future

Despite ongoing difficulties, Buhari advised Nigerians to stay hopeful and realistic in their expectations. “Our expectations from our governments should not get heavy,” he remarked, encouraging unity and perseverance as the country navigates its current challenges.

He concluded his message with a note of encouragement: “I am wishing President Tinubu heartfelt congratulations on his two years in office. May you keep leading with wisdom and care.”

Political Context

The statement comes as the APC formally endorses Tinubu as its sole candidate for the 2027 presidential election, a move that arrives amid continued defections from opposition parties.

As the Tinubu administration enters its third year, all eyes are on how the government will address ongoing economic issues and maintain political stability.
