US citizen detained in Russia for drug possession

A 28-year-old American has been detained by Russian authorities at Vnukovo Airport in Moscow after customs officers discovered cannabis-infused marmalade in his luggage.

The individual, who arrived on a flight from Istanbul, was stopped after a drug-sniffing dog flagged his bag. A search uncovered two plastic jars and a Ziploc bag containing the suspected items. The man reportedly told officials that the candy was prescribed by a doctor in the United States.

Authorities have opened a criminal case against him for "smuggling narcotic drugs," which carries a potential sentence of five to ten years in prison and a fine of up to 1 million rubles. A court ruling on February 10 confirmed his detention.

This case comes amid heightened scrutiny of foreign nationals carrying banned substances into Russia, with previous cases drawing significant diplomatic attention.
