N namdi Azikiwe University, Awka, has expelled a student, Goddy-Mbakwe Chimamaka Precious, for physically assaulting a lecturer from the Department of Theatre and Film Studies.
The expulsion was confirmed in an official letter dated February 13, 2025, and signed by the Acting Registrar, Mr. Victor I. Modebelu. The university's decision followed recommendations from the Student Disciplinary Committee, which found Precious guilty of violating the institution’s disciplinary regulations, particularly Regulation 4 (SDR).
The incident, which sparked widespread outrage, was captured in a viral video showing Precious attacking Dr. Chukwudi Okoye. Reports indicate that the confrontation occurred after the lecturer interrupted a TikTok video she was recording on campus.
In response to the attack, the university emphasized its zero-tolerance policy on student misconduct. The expulsion, effective immediately, mandates Precious to vacate the university premises and return any university property in her possession.
The official statement read: "The Ag. Vice-Chancellor has received the report from the Student Disciplinary Committee regarding your assault on a lecturer from the Department of Theatre and Film Studies. The act constitutes gross misconduct and a serious violation of the Students Disciplinary Regulations, particularly Regulation 4 (SDR). Consequently, the Ag. Vice-Chancellor, on behalf of the University Senate, has approved the Committee’s recommendation for your expulsion, which takes immediate effect. You are to vacate the university premises and return any university property in your possession without delay."
The university’s decision has ignited discussions on student conduct and the appropriate use of social media within academic institutions.
