N ine-time Nigerian champions, Enyimba, have announced free entry for fans ahead of their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) showdown against Rivers United on Saturday at the Enyimba International Stadium in Aba.
With just two wins in their last 10 NPFL fixtures, Enyimba’s struggles this season have been evident, and their latest gesture of opening the gates for free could be an attempt to rekindle support from their passionate fan base.
“Gate fee? Forget it! The clash against Rivers United is absolutely free, come and cheer the People’s Elephant,” the club announced on its official X account on Friday.
Currently sitting 10th on the NPFL table with 31 points from 23 games, Enyimba’s title defense has been far from convincing in the 2024/25 campaign.
The fixture also sets the stage for a unique reunion, as both teams will be led by former coaches facing their previous employers. Rivers United will be managed by former Enyimba coach Finidi George, who guided the Aba-based club to their ninth league title. On the other hand, Enyimba’s new head coach, Stanley Eguma, was dismissed by Rivers United last season and now seeks redemption with the People’s Elephant.
In the reverse fixture earlier this season, Finidi’s Rivers United secured a 2-0 victory. The team currently occupies third place in the NPFL standings with 38 points, trailing league leaders Remo Stars by 10 points.
For Eguma, the match presents an opportunity to settle scores with his former club, while a victory for Enyimba would bolster their push to regain form and challenge for continental qualification.
Rivers United, on the other hand, will be aiming to maintain pressure on the title race as they seek maximum points in Aba.
With the stakes high and a free-entry incentive in place, a thrilling encounter is expected as both sides battle for crucial points in the NPFL.
