E nglish domestic football is set for a technological upgrade as the FA Cup introduces semi-automated offside technology for the first time in its fifth-round fixtures.
The Football Association (FA) confirmed that the system will be deployed in seven matches held at Premier League stadiums, with the Premier League expected to adopt the technology later this season.
The new system aims to enhance accuracy by reducing human subjectivity in offside calls. Traditionally, VAR officials must determine the exact moment a ball is played, the positioning of defenders and attackers, and the angle of their bodies. Now, artificial intelligence will automate these key decisions, using specialized cameras installed beneath stadium roofs to track player and ball movement in real time.
Premier League clubs had initially approved the technology for the 2024-25 season with an October 2024 rollout, but delays in testing pushed back its implementation. UEFA has already used semi-automated offsides in the Champions League since 2022, setting a precedent for its effectiveness.
The FA stated that the technology will provide "more efficient placement of the virtual offside line, based on optical player tracking, and produce virtual graphics to enhance the in-stadium and broadcast experience." While the accuracy of decisions remains unchanged, the system is expected to improve speed and efficiency.
VAR will continue to operate across all eight FA Cup fifth-round matches, including the one at Championship side Preston North End, where referees will make in-stadium VAR announcements. The fifth round is set to take place on the weekend of March 1.
