A tletico Madrid have reportedly added Wilfred Ndidi, the Nigerian midfielder currently playing for Leicester City, to their list of potential signings for the summer transfer window. The Spanish club is in search of a defensive midfielder after failing to address the position last summer. Ndidi, who has been a key player for Leicester in the Premier League, is now seen as a possible solution for Atletico’s midfield needs.
With club captain Koke Resurreccion nearing the end of his career and the expected departure of Thomas Lemar, Atletico’s sporting department has identified the need for a new defensive anchor at the Metropolitano Stadium before the start of the 2025/26 season.
Over the past few months, Atletico’s shortlist has included several candidates, including Samu Costa from Mallorca, but Ndidi has recently emerged as a serious contender. Despite being linked with Barcelona last summer, Ndidi signed a new contract with Leicester but is expected to leave the club in 2025, with Atletico Madrid now firmly in the race for his signature.
In addition to Atletico, Real Betis have also shown interest in Ndidi, with the Spanish side looking to replace Johnny Cardoso, who is reportedly set to move to Tottenham Hotspur in the summer. AS Monaco are also competing for Ndidi, having seen a £20m bid rejected during the winter transfer window.
The 28-year-old midfielder has been a key figure for Leicester, featuring in 208 Premier League matches and contributing significantly to the club’s 2020/21 FA Cup win and Community Shield triumph. Ndidi also played a pivotal role in Leicester’s Championship-winning season in 2023/24, scoring four goals and assisting five in 32 appearances.
Ndidi’s current contract with Leicester runs until 2027, but it is expected that he will seek a new challenge in the upcoming transfer window.
