F ormer Belgian international Radja Nainggolan was detained on Monday as part of an investigation into cocaine trafficking through the port of Antwerp, according to a statement from the Brussels prosecutor’s office.
Authorities conducted nationwide raids, apprehending several suspects, including the 36-year-old footballer.
“The investigation concerns alleged incidents of cocaine importation from South America to Europe via the port of Antwerp, as well as its distribution within Belgium,” the prosecutors confirmed.
Born in Antwerp, Nainggolan recently came out of retirement to join Belgian second-division team Lokeren, following a distinguished career that saw him earn 30 caps and score six goals for Belgium’s national team.
After stints with top Italian clubs including Roma, Inter Milan, and Cagliari, Nainggolan returned to Belgium in 2021 to play for Royal Antwerp. Last summer, he was a free agent before signing with Lokeren last week.
The midfielder made an immediate impact, scoring on his debut in Lokeren’s 1-1 draw against K. Lierse over the weekend.
Nainggolan has been no stranger to controversy. Just months ago, Belgian media reported his suspension for using an electronic cigarette while on the bench during a match.
