Nigeria Secures $3.25bn Foreign Investment to Boost Power Supply

P resident Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced Nigeria’s ambitious efforts to improve electricity access for 23.7 million people, supported by over $3.25 billion in foreign investment. The commitment was reaffirmed at the recently concluded Mission 300 Africa Energy Summit in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

In a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Tinubu emphasized Nigeria's determination to provide energy equity by electrifying even its most remote communities.

Investment Breakdown

Key contributors to the initiative include the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the World Bank:

  • AfDB’s $1.1 billion investment aims to supply electricity to 5 million Nigerians by 2026.
  • $200 million under the Nigeria Electrification Project is expected to electrify 500,000 people by 2025.
  • $700 million for the Desert to Power Programme and $500 million for the Nigeria-Grid Battery Energy Storage System, targeting 2 million people.
  • World Bank’s $750 million funding will expand access through mini-grids and standalone solar systems, benefiting 16.2 million people.

A Call for Collective Action

Speaking through Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, President Tinubu praised the collaborative efforts of the AfDB, the World Bank, and other development partners, which aim to provide electricity access to 300 million Africans by 2030.

Tinubu urged African leaders to prioritize energy access for their populations, stating, “Let us work together to create a brighter future for our citizens—where every African can access reliable and affordable energy. A future where our industries thrive, our economies grow, and our people prosper.”

Nigeria’s 2030 Commitment

President Tinubu reiterated Nigeria’s pledge to deliver reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity to its unelectrified population by 2030. This initiative forms part of a broader strategy to drive economic growth, reduce poverty, and ensure energy equity across the nation.
