T he Lagos State House of Assembly heightened security measures at its complex as lawmakers convened for Monday’s (today) plenary session, GLiDE NEWS reports.
The heightened security follows recent political drama, with former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa claiming on Saturday that he remains the legitimate leader of the House. Obasa was impeached on January 13, 2025, after allegations of misconduct and financial misappropriation surfaced. Deputy Speaker Mojisola Meranda was named his successor.
Monday’s plenary marks the third session chaired by Meranda since Obasa’s removal. The former speaker has been notably absent from previous sittings.
Obasa’s Defense
Speaking on Saturday, Obasa dismissed the allegations of corruption leveled against him, describing the claims as baseless. Addressing supporters at the Speaker’s Lodge in Ikeja, Lagos, he declared, "I remain the Speaker until due process is followed for my removal. I have not committed any wrongdoing. Let’s address these issues the proper way."
Obasa also criticized allegations of financial impropriety, questioning claims of extravagant expenditures. "How can anyone suggest we constructed a gate for ₦16 billion or purchased 40 Hilux vehicles at ₦1 billion each? These allegations are absurd," he said.
Security Measures
Ahead of Monday’s plenary, the acting Clerk’s office issued a directive requiring all staff and legislative aides to present valid identification to access the premises. "Entry will be denied to anyone without a valid identity card," the notice emphasized.
Police Maintain Order
Commissioner of Police Ishola Olawale assured residents that law enforcement would ensure peace in Lagos. "The police have no jurisdiction inside the Assembly, but outside, we’ll maintain law and order," Olawale stated. He dismissed allegations that over 200 officers had invaded Obasa’s residence on the day of his removal, calling the claim unfounded.
Efforts at Reconciliation
Sources reveal ongoing attempts to mediate between Obasa and his colleagues. A meeting involving the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) and President Bola Tinubu is reportedly scheduled for Wednesday.
"Efforts are focused on a political solution rather than a legal challenge," a source disclosed. However, Obasa’s presence at Monday’s session is unlikely due to heightened tensions.
Observers Weigh In
Former Deputy Majority Leader Olumuyiwa Jimoh described Obasa’s removal as justified, citing it as a lesson in the perils of power. "Absolute power corrupts. Obasa’s colleagues made their decision, and his fate was sealed by their majority vote," Jimoh remarked.
The Assembly remains on high alert as Lagos navigates this critical political moment.
