Google Implements U.S. Government’s Renaming of Gulf of Mexico and Denali

I n response to a recent executive action by the U.S. government, Google has announced updates to its mapping services, reflecting the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and the reversion of Denali to Mount McKinley. These changes will soon be visible on Google Maps for users within the United States.

Google clarified in a statement that it adheres to a longstanding policy of updating names on its platforms once changes are officially recognized by government sources. The adjustments will be implemented once the Geographic Names Information System, the federal database responsible for tracking geographical names, is updated.

The renaming initiative stems from an executive order signed shortly after the new administration took office, emphasizing the importance of honoring the nation’s heritage and legacy. The order stated, “It is in the national interest to promote the extraordinary heritage of our Nation and ensure future generations of American citizens celebrate the legacy of our American heroes.”

The decision to revert Denali to Mount McKinley was described as a move to honor the achievements and sacrifices of President William McKinley, while the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America was framed as a recognition of its significant contributions to the U.S. economy.

Google emphasized that these changes will only be visible to users within the United States. For international users, both the original and updated names will be displayed, in line with the company’s policy of reflecting local official names based on the user’s location.

These updates highlight the intersection of technology, geography, and national policy, as digital platforms adapt to reflect evolving governmental directives.
