D avid Coote, a former Premier League referee with over 100 top-flight matches to his name, has broken his silence on the personal challenges that led to his dismissal by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL). The 42-year-old officiator, who was let go following the emergence of controversial videos, has opened up about the pressures, fear of abuse due to his sexuality, and personal tragedies that shaped his actions.
Coote, who officiated high-profile matches during his career, was dismissed after videos surfaced allegedly showing him using a white powder and making derogatory remarks about former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp. In a candid interview, Coote confirmed much of the footage but provided deeper context, shedding light on the emotional toll of hiding his sexuality and coping with external pressures.
Struggles with Identity and Self-Esteem
Coote revealed that he had long grappled with his self-esteem and identity as a gay man, a struggle he concealed for most of his life. “I felt a deep sense of shame, especially during my teenage years. I didn’t come out to my parents until I was 21, and to my friends until I was 25,” he shared. “My sexuality isn’t the sole reason for my actions, but it’s an integral part of my story. I’ve had real struggles dealing with hiding who I am.”
He described how concealing his emotions and sexuality became second nature, a trait that served him well as a referee but took a toll on his personal life. “Hiding my emotions as a young referee and hiding my sexuality were intertwined. It might have been a good quality for officiating, but it was detrimental to my well-being as a person. That led me down a path of destructive behaviors,” Coote explained.
Fear of Abuse and Emotional Strain
Coote also spoke about the fear of being openly gay in the world of football, a sport where abuse and scrutiny are often part of the job. “I faced deeply unpleasant abuse throughout my career as a referee. Adding my sexuality to that would have made it even more challenging,” he said. The emotional strain of living a double life, coupled with the relentless pressure of his profession, pushed him to seek unhealthy coping mechanisms.
Substance Use as an Escape
The former referee admitted to turning to drugs as a way to escape the overwhelming stress of his job and personal losses, including the death of his mother and his uncle’s diagnosis with motor neurone disease. While he denied being dependent on substances, Coote acknowledged that they provided a temporary reprieve from his struggles. “It wasn’t something I relied on daily or weekly, but it became an escape route during particularly tough times. It fills me with shame to admit that, but it was my reality at the time,” he confessed.
Coote emphasized that his actions were not premeditated but rather a response to the relentless demands of his career. “I was struggling with the schedule and the pressure. There was no opportunity to pause, and I found myself seeking an escape,” he added.
Ongoing Investigations and Denials
Coote is currently under investigation by the Football Association (FA) over allegations that he agreed to issue a yellow card to a player in exchange for financial gain—a claim he vehemently denies. “There was no prior agreement. I simply did my job, and the player committed a foul worthy of a yellow card. I received nothing in return. It’s disheartening to see my integrity questioned,” he stated.
Additionally, a separate UEFA investigation is underway regarding a video allegedly showing Coote using cocaine while serving as a VAR official during the Euro 2024 tournament.
A Path to Redemption
Despite the controversies and ongoing inquiries, Coote has taken steps to rebuild his life. He has sought therapy and is focusing on improving his physical and mental health. “I’m guilty of my actions, but I’m committed to becoming the best version of myself. I’m working on my well-being and taking responsibility for my past mistakes,” he said.
Reflecting on his career and its abrupt end, Coote expressed regret but remains hopeful for the future. “I’m trying to move forward and learn from my experiences. My goal now is to prioritize my health and well-being,” he concluded.
