| Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule |
O rganized labour in Nasarawa State has issued a three-week ultimatum to Governor Abdullahi Sule to begin the payment of the N70,000 new minimum wage and to address a backlog of workers' entitlements totaling N250 million.
Ismaila Okoh, Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Nasarawa State, made the demand during a press briefing in Lafia on Thursday. The briefing followed an emergency meeting held by labour leaders with workers from the state. Okoh warned that if the government fails to meet these demands by the end of August, workers will be compelled to go on strike. He emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “Civil servants in the state have made enormous sacrifices for the development of the state, so it is important for the state government to act fast in improving the welfare of workers.” In response, Abigail Waya, the state Head of Civil Service, mentioned that the government has not yet finalized plans for implementing the new minimum wage but assured that the state government is committed to enhancing workers' welfare. The atmosphere among civil servants in Nasarawa State remains tense, with growing unease due to the government’s repeated promises to commence payment of the new minimum wage without concrete action. |
