N ext week, Google will unveil its Pixel 9 family of smartphones at the annual Made By Google event, where the tech giant showcases its vision for the future of smartphones. The Pixel 9 launch follows the successful introduction of the Pixel 8 series, which marked a significant step forward with its new displays, enhanced cameras, updated software, and the custom-designed Tensor Mobile chipset.
The Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro were positioned as AI-first devices, setting the benchmark for how generative AI would be integrated into the mobile experience. With the industry now accustomed to these advancements, Google aims to build on this foundation, reinforcing its leadership in smartphone AI and maintaining its position at the forefront of artificial intelligence.
The upcoming event will focus on strengthening Google's AI capabilities rather than defining them. The Pixel platform has already demonstrated a range of AI tools, including advanced photo editing features such as removing, moving, or altering individual elements within images. Users can also transfer expressions between photos for optimal results and clean up audio in videos.
Additional AI functionalities on the Pixel devices include audio transcription, summarization of web pages and emails, and smart search options based on screenshots or highlighted screen areas. AI also enhances call screening, translation services, and provides intelligent suggestions for replies and content creation.
Many of these features were first introduced with the Pixel 8 series before being adopted by other Android manufacturers. Notably, Google's "circle to search" feature, which initially debuted on the Pixel 8, has been mirrored and expanded upon by Samsung's Galaxy AI platform. This trend has continued with other manufacturers incorporating similar AI tools into their devices, with chipmakers ensuring that their hardware supports these advanced AI routines.
