T he Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) has clarified the monthly salary and allowances for each of Nigeria's 109 senators, amid ongoing debates over their compensation.
According to RMAFC Chairman Mohammed Shehu, each senator earns a total of N1,063,860 per month. This amount is broken down into various components, including:
- Basic Salary: N168,866.70
- Motor Vehicle Fueling and Maintenance Allowance: N126,650.00
- Personal Assistant: N42,216.66
- Domestic Staff: N126,650.00
- Entertainment: N50,660.00
- Utilities: N50,660.00
- Newspapers/Periodicals: N25,330.00
- Wardrobe: N42,216.66
- House Maintenance: N8,443.33
- Constituency Allowance: N422,166.66
Over a year, this totals approximately N12.72 million per senator, with the Federal Government spending around N1.4 billion annually on all senators.
In addition to the regular monthly allowances, some payments are made once per tenure:
- Furniture Allowance: N6,079,200.00
- Severance Gratuity: N6,079,200.00
- Vehicle Allowance (optional, as a loan): N8,105,600.00
Former senator Shehu Sani recently claimed that each senator receives an additional N13.5 million in running costs beyond the N750,000 monthly payment prescribed by the commission. However, Shehu clarified that the RMAFC lacks constitutional authority to enforce compliance with the remuneration package, though this gap is being addressed by the National Assembly.
The Senate has countered former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s criticism that lawmakers determine their own salaries. Senate spokesman Yemi Adaramodu challenged anyone with credible evidence to refute this, stating that salaries are strictly allocated by the RMAFC.
For further details on the remuneration package, the RMAFC directs the public to visit their official website at www.rmafc.gov.ng.
